Response methodology

There is no room to read a manual

In the hour of danger — the first moments of response, a hazardous spill spreading, the inevitable psychological pressure on any responder — a single second can save further lives.

Why the order is fixed

HAZ MED modelled those decisive moments and arranged the contents of each dedicated spill kit in a carefully considered sequence. The sequence is printed on the product itself and built into our advance training programmes.

The purpose is simple: the responder should reach for the right item without first deciding which item is right. Sequence removes the decision. Removing the decision removes the delay.

The full response methodology comes together in seven core steps.

The seven steps

  1. Step 1

    Assess first

The location, the volume, the hazard level and the spilled substance. Everything after this depends on getting this right, and this step costs seconds.

  2. Step 2

    Isolate the perimeter

Isolate the spill perimeter to stop it spreading and keep others away. A spill that has been walked through is a larger incident than the one you arrived at.

  3. Step 3

    Don protective equipment

Don the protective equipment appropriate to that specific hazard. Appropriate is not the same as available — the hazard dictates the glove, the mask and the suit.

  4. Step 4

    Stop the spread

Stop the spill from spreading, working the perimeter first and then the centre. Working from the centre outward pushes the spill ahead of you.

  5. Step 5

    Collect the spill

Collect the spill using absorbent, solidifying and collection materials. Liquid that has been solidified cannot be walked into a corridor.

  6. Step 6

    Clean and treat the surface

Clean the spill site and treat the surface with the designated products. Hidden residues become a focal point for later incidents if they are not dealt with intelligently.

  7. Step 7

    Seal, dispose, document

Seal the collection bags, follow the designated disposal route, and document the incident. The documentation is what turns a response into evidence for your compliance file.

The methodology is not a poster. It is the packing order.

Each kit is packed so that the components come to hand in the sequence above. The same sequence is printed on the product, taught in the field training session, and reproduced on the wall chart at your response point and on the responder's personal card.

Your team should be trained on this before they need it

The field session is practical, at your response site, using your own kits in real conditions — one session per response type, in Arabic, English or both. Attendance is recorded and the register is handed to you.
